Introduction: Edu-tourism – learning while traveling - three-day intense immersion program on video advertising, video journalism (short stories) and filmmaking (long stories). The objective is to increase awareness of the entire converged multi-media process and technical and/or project & team management skills with low-medium quality and high quantity news & advertising segments. Certificate & placement (internships, freelance, part & full-time), sources/ideas for grants & fellowships, etc. During the first day you will experience an entire photo/video shoot to post-production (for a business advertisement), something that could take months, even years, in Hollywood.
Target Audience: Those with an interest in story telling (journalism and filmmaking) converging written (in-depth) with multimedia (photos, video, animation and sound).
Ages: Open to all ages: young (teens & twenties) through old (maximum 102 years old). Low to medium-technical aptitude/interest; introverts and extroverts; diverse backgrounds: cultural, ethnic, religious, political, socioeconomic, etc.
Camaraderie among a diverse group of like-minded people
Requirements: Laptop computer with any video editing software (or we can help download and install free software); smartphone with a built-in video camera; ideally a small/day backpack; notepad & pens. Optional: external mouse and mini-tripod for a smartphone (approximately $5 – can be purchased nearby).
Optional story idea/capstone project: Short (2-8 minutes) segment/documentary about a topic of personal interest. Please bring a one-page (no more) introduction (including target audience), “who, why, what, when, where and how” - if you want to solicit feedback and participation from fellow classmates. And media (photos, graphics, videos, soundbites, website reference/source links, etc.).

First Day: Monday, April 13, 2026
9:30 - 10:00: Registration, coffee/tea & light breakfast (pay venue directly). Setup laptop (power & WIFI)
10:00 (SHARP) – 11:00: Introduction/overview. Three legs of media (advertising, content & distribution) + subscriptions (paid by consumer) and examples of each. Preproduction, production and post-production; “less is more”… “I would have made this shorter if I had more time.”
11:00: Break then introduction to video editing software and process: storyboard, timeline, etc.
Share capstone project story ideas (2-3 minutes each). Pairing low w/ medium tech.
12:00 – 12:30 lunch then field: video/photo shoot with a local business.
3:00 – 6:00 pm: Lab video processing and editing (observe/participate), test/dry run video editing on your laptop over dinner/socializing
Second Day: Tuesday, April 14, 2026
9:30 - 10:00: Coffee/tea & light breakfast (pay venue directly). Optional: install/configure video downloading plugins (YouTube, Instagram, etc.)
10:00 (SHARP) – 12:00 Stories & information sources (website: government, corporate, free/public domain vs. paid, etc.); video interviewing techniques, planning, “who, why, what, where, when & how” – VOT (voice on-tap), including information (name, contact information) with explicit/implicit permission to use; role of media law attorneys. Role playing interviewing – camera & MOS (man on the street).
Project: Video segment package (script, preferably 45-90 seconds @ 3-words per second… “less is more”).
12:00 - 2:00: Lunch then additional lab/training
4:00 - 7:00 PM: Lab then dinner & socializing.
Third Day: Wednesday, April 15, 2026
9:30 - 10:00: Coffee/tea & light breakfast (pay venue directly).
10:00 - 4:00 PM: Post-production: demonstrate work for peer review. Update on capstone projects.
Posting on YouTube/social media. Tech concepts (such as CDN – content delivery network), file formats and sizes, etc.
(if available): tour studio with a sound room, green screen and/or news desk and participate in a demonstration. Podcast demonstration.
Nest steps: Sources of grants and fellowships. Possible work: Stringer/freelance, internships and part/full-time work. Job searching techniques.
